Heritage Date and y Don Quijote Awards

One of the most
known festivities in our community is the celebration of
our Hispanic Heritage. To this effect, the Counsel of
the Hispanidad has been preparing for over three
decades.
This year after electing
Miss Hispanidad, Miss Cindy Kohn Cybulkiewicz, and her
maids, a Gala celebrating the Hispanic Heritage will
take place in the gardens of Parrot Jungle,
enlivened by Havana Soul.
This Friday 14th of
October will make history in the city of Miami, as the
Council will present Don Quijote awards to two of
its most noticeable members, organized by the
Counsel of the Hispanic Heritage and sponsored by Publix
Supermarkets, Dewar' s 12, Continental Trust Mortgage,
Baptist Health of South Florida, BTS and Parrot Jungle.
Honored in 2005
they are two outstanding members of our community,
Dr. Pedro J Greer Jr. Andy Garcia
The Prize Mr. Quijote Humanitarian will be received by
Dr.. Pedro José Greer Jr., outstanding by his humane
work with the poor and the helpless.
Mrs. Miriam Rosquete,
president of the Counsel of the Hispanic Heritage says
about Dr. Greer that 'he is a source of inspiration and
pride for all Hispanics, he has been able to
combine his indisputable professional successes with an
ardent desire to help others'.
In the field of Art and
Culture, the prize will be received by Cuban American
actor , Andy Garcia, who not only has been one of the
most distinguished actors of our times, but who has
maintained with pride his heritage and his roots.
According to Mrs.
Rosquete, 'Andy Garcia deserves great recognition
for his valuable work He has shown love for his
country, and a tireless desire to help others succeed.
He has also been able to make closer ties between the
Spanish-speaking countries and the United States."
The statuette of Don
Quijote is a masterpiece designed out in bronze by the
globally famous sculptor ,Tony Lopez. The figure weighs
approximately 12.8 pounds and is presented mounted on
marble.
This award is presented
each year to a member of the community who has excelled in promoting
our
heritage, the arts and traditions of the Spanish
speaking countries. Don Quijote award has been
presented to figures as noticeable as Celia Cruz, José Ferrer, winner of
an Oscar, Tany Perez,
famous ballplayer ,Don Francisco,
an international TV personality, Camilo José
Cela, winner of a Nobel prize, Gonzalo Facio, Ambassador of Costa Rica and Former-President of The United Nations, Manuel Olivencia,
Special Ambassador of Spain and General
Agent of Expo 92, and Glory Bejarano, First
Lady of Costa Rica.
During this special event,
guests to this Gala of the Hispanidad will enjoy a
dinner dance, the presentation of the Don Quijote
awards, and will be helping a noble cause, since
the Gala is to benefit the scholarship fund sponsored by
the Festival of Hispanidad.
